Web video, everyone?

The barriers to putting video content on the world wide web are amazingly low, and getting lower. Anyone with a video camera and an internet connection can put their video on the web. It's inexpensive, it's easy, and there are billions of potential viewers.

The barriers to putting video content on the traditional broadcast ("mainstream") media are considerably higher. While the potential for viewers is in the many millions, it's very expensive, complex, and, while user generated content is growing, is generally limited to a "closed" society of experienced professionals.

But putting a video on the web, and actually getting people to watch it, are two very different things. While the barriers for entry are low, the obstacles for filmmakers and visual storytellers, and their potential audiences, are many; video search technology doesn't work very well; viewers are easily distracted and are ready to click away any moment; and traditional broadcast storytelling often doesn't work on the web.
